JPI has been nominated for the NCTC 2010 TechNite Rising Star Award. The Rising Star Award is an award that recognizes a local technology company which is a "rising star." The company might not be a household name yet, but it could soon be another local success story in the NewVA region. Finalists and winners will be recognized at the 11th Annual TechNite Awards Banquet on April 7th at The Inn at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.
From January 17th through the 21st, 2010, IBM held its annual training event, Lotusphere, in Orlando, Florida. JPI team members Gerald Howell and Dawn Sangree were in attendance to learn about the latest technologies.
As usual, the exciting opening session was packed with information about the Lotus family of projects (and guest speaker William Shatner). New innovations in Lotus Quickr, Sametime, Connections, and Lotus Live were showcased. Dawn was impressed by the new ability to integrate tasks and events on Quickr calendars with individual Lotus Domino calendars; Gerald could not wait to implement the latest Sametime features back at the office including permanently available meeting rooms and slick new unified telephony features.
As developers, both Dawn and Gerald attended many sessions on how to program Lotus products using the latest Web 2.0 tools. Sessions included plenty of code samples and useful tips on using technologies such as Atom feeds, Dojo, Rest and Xpages to update their work.
Other highlights included a tour through the innovations lab where a great visual planning tool for Sametime was on display, lab time in the Lotus labs learning how to program for Lotus Symphony and a walk through the show floor which offered interesting development and administration tools from Ytria and Cloud computing technology from Group.
Energized for the coming year, the JPI team will be working to implement what they have learned.
JPI has matched our employee contributions with a donation of $1035 to the American Red Cross in support of the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort.
JPI Senior Software Engineer Mike Allred recently returned from his third trip to New Orleans to assist in the ongoing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The latest trip was much different than his previous trips; instead of working with homeowners to remove debris and repair damage caused by Katrina, Mike helped revive a local business devasted by the hurricane. Guiott's Nursery was a large garden center located in the Hollygrove neighborhood and it was also part of the New Orleans Food & Farm Network (http://www.noffn.org). As a result of volunteers like Mike, Guiott's Nursery is on its way to once again providing local communities with equal access to safe and nutritious food. JPI is proud to support Mike and his efforts to help rebuild New Orleans.

As a member of Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and in partnership with Canal Street Presbyterian Church in the heart of New Orleans, Senior Software Engineer Mike Allred has made two trips to New Orleans to assist in the rebuilding effort.

In 2006, Mike was part of a team that worked with homeowners to remove all of the flood damaged contents from their homes. This included building materials (flooring, drywall, insulation, wiring, etc) as well as personal belongings that the homeowner was unable to remove before being evacuated (furniture, household goods, clothing, etc).
In 2007, Mike was back with the same group again but got to help homeowners with the rebuilding process this time. His group helped install flooring and paint walls in one house. In another house, they helped hang drywall and "mud and tape" the seams and screw holes. JPI was pleased to provide paid leave and other financial contributions to assist this important effort.
